Gastroscopy (or endoscopy) is an examination of the oesophagus (gullet or food pipe), stomach and duodenum (upper part of the small bowel) using a flexible telescope called a gastroscope.
When necessary, during the examination, a number of small procedures can also be carried out. These procedures may include:
- Taking a small tissue sample (biopsy)
- Stopping bleeding from an ulcer
- Removal of polyps.
How to prepare before Sedated Gastroscopy?
- You will need to avoid intake of food and drinks for at least 6 hours before the procedure to ensure an empty stomach.
- To prepare for the endoscopy, it is advised for the patient to avoid consuming high-fiber foods and vegetables for several days leading up to the procedure. However, in the evening prior to the procedure (at least 2 hours before taking any medication), a light meal such as porridge or soup can be consumed.
- The patient should bring a list of recently taken medications, any history of drug allergies, and any other existing medical conditions to share with the endoscopist.
- It is important not to ingest colored water, milk, or any light-blocking medications on the morning of the endoscopy.
*Please take note:
- If you are going through sedation for an endoscopy, refrain from consuming water for a period of 2 hours prior to the procedure.
- In case you encounter any unusual symptoms following the intake of medication, kindly contact Yersin Medical Secretary at 0909 27 12 84 (Mr. Sơn Tịnh) for further consultation.
